अध्याय 230

श्लोक 1

अस्माभिस् तु श्रुतं व्यास यत् त्वया समुदाहृतम् प्रादुर्भावाश्रितं पुण्यं माया विष्णोश् च दुर्विदा

asmābhis tu śrutaṃ vyāsa yat tvayā samudāhṛtam prādurbhāvāśritaṃ puṇyaṃ māyā viṣṇoś ca durvidā

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

The holy centre known as Atmatirtha yields worldly pleasures and salvation to men. I shall describe the efficacy of that holy centre where Siva is called JiianeSvara.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 2

श्रोतुम् इच्छामहे त्वत्तो यथावद् उपसंहृतिम् महाप्रलयसंज्ञां च कल्पान्ते च महामुने

śrotum icchāmahe tvatto yathāvad upasaṃhṛtim mahāpralayasaṃjñāṃ ca kalpānte ca mahāmune

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

O overlord of Devas! As ill luck would have it, I have fallen into the well of worldly existence. I am sunk in the mire of misery by delusion. I am enveloped by the darkness of ignor¬ ance. I am not able to realize the supreme soul.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 3

श्रूयतां भो मुनिश्रेष्ठा यथावद् अनुसंहृतिः कल्पान्ते प्राकृते चैव प्रलये जायते यथा

śrūyatāṃ bho muniśreṣṭhā yathāvad anusaṃhṛtiḥ kalpānte prākṛte caiva pralaye jāyate yathā

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

I am pierced by the powerful trident of sins. I am torn asunder by the razor of worries and anxieties. I am scorched by the terrible heat of five sense-organs. I am wearied. Redeem me, O Somanatha.

श्लोक 4

अहोरात्रं पितॄणां तु मासो ऽब्दं त्रिदिवौकसाम् चतुर्युगसहस्रे तु ब्रह्मणो ऽहर् द्विजोत्तमाः

ahorātraṃ pitṝṇāṃ tu māso 'bdaṃ tridivaukasām caturyugasahasre tu brahmaṇo 'har dvijottamāḥ

English

I have been bound by the fetters of proverty. I have been damned by the scorching flames of fire of sickness. I have

कृतं त्रेता द्वापरं च कलिश् चेति चतुर्युगम् दैवैर् वर्षसहस्रैस् तु तद् द्वादशाभिर् उच्यते

kṛtaṃ tretā dvāparaṃ ca kaliś ceti caturyugam daivair varṣasahasrais tu tad dvādaśābhir ucyate

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

I have been extremely distressed by births and deaths, thirst and hunger, Rajas and Tamas. I have been overwhelmed by old age. O lord, see the condition in which I am placed today and be merciful.

श्लोक 6

चतुर्युगाण्य् अशेषाणि सदृशानि स्वरूपतः आद्यं कृतयुगं प्रोक्तं मुनयो ऽन्त्यं तथा कलिम्

caturyugāṇy aśeṣāṇi sadṛśāni svarūpataḥ ādyaṃ kṛtayugaṃ proktaṃ munayo 'ntyaṃ tathā kalim

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

I have been landed in difficulty severally by lust,anger, jealousy, arrogance, vanity and other faults. I have been pierced by them. O lord, like a true leader ward off these enemies of mine.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 7

आद्ये कृतयुगे सर्गो ब्रह्मणा क्रियते यतः क्रियते चोपसंहारस् तथान्ते ऽपि कलौ युगे

ādye kṛtayuge sargo brahmaṇā kriyate yataḥ kriyate copasaṃhāras tathānte 'pi kalau yuge

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

I am not virtuous. I am not devout. I am not discreet. I am not merciful. You are a donor. Hence, O lord, worthy of being sought refuge in, place the word 'Soma' in my mind.

श्लोक 8

कलेः स्वरूपं भगवन् विस्तराद् वक्तुम् अर्हसि धर्मश् चतुष्पाद् भगवान् यस्मिन् वैकल्यम् ऋच्छति

kaleḥ svarūpaṃ bhagavan vistarād vaktum arhasi dharmaś catuṣpād bhagavān yasmin vaikalyam ṛcchati

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

I do not earnestly beg for the overlordship of Devas, O Somanatha. I request humbly for the presence of lotus-like feet of Srisomanatha in the middle of my lotus-like heart.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 9

कलिस्वरूपं भो विप्रा यत् पृच्छध्वं ममानघाः निबोधध्वं समासेन वर्तते यन् महत्तरम्

kalisvarūpaṃ bho viprā yat pṛcchadhvaṃ mamānaghāḥ nibodhadhvaṃ samāsena vartate yan mahattaram

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Even as I have been known to you as a sinner, listen to my submission. Let me be present always where the word "Siva" is heard.

श्लोक 10

वर्णाश्रमाचारवती प्रवृत्तिर् न कलौ नृणाम् न साम-ऋग्यजुर्वेदविनिष्पादनहैतुकी

varṇāśramācāravatī pravṛttir na kalau nṛṇām na sāma-ṛgyajurvedaviniṣpādanahaitukī

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

O consort of Gauri, O Sankara, O Somanatha, O lord of the universe, O storehouse of sympathy, O soul of all, where eulogies are offered thus, there some happy and successful person is sure to dwell.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 11

विवाहा न कलौ धर्मा न शिष्या गुरुसंस्थिताः न पुत्रा धार्मिकाश् चैव न च वह्निक्रियाक्रमः

vivāhā na kalau dharmā na śiṣyā gurusaṃsthitāḥ na putrā dhārmikāś caiva na ca vahnikriyākramaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

On hearing the eulogy of Dattatreya, Lord Hara was pleased. Bhava, the creator of the universe, said to that Yogin, "I am the bestower of boons".

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 12

यत्र तत्र कुले जातो बली सर्वेश्वरः कलौ सर्वेभ्य एव वर्णेभ्यो नरः कन्योपजीवनः

yatra tatra kule jāto balī sarveśvaraḥ kalau sarvebhya eva varṇebhyo naraḥ kanyopajīvanaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

"Let it be so", saying this Siva vanished there itself. Thenceforth wise men know that holy centre as Atmatirtha. O Narada, one shall attain salvation by taking holy dip there and by distributing monetary gifts.

श्लोक 13

येन तेनैव योगेन द्विजातिर् दीक्षितः कलौ यैव सैव च विप्रेन्द्राः प्रायश्चित्तक्रिया कलौ

yena tenaiva yogena dvijātir dīkṣitaḥ kalau yaiva saiva ca viprendrāḥ prāyaścittakriyā kalau

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

There are some other holy centres, viz. ASvattha, Pippala and Mandatirtha in the North. Listen to their excellence.

सर्वम् एव कलौ शास्त्रं यस्य यद् वचनं द्विजाः देवताश् च कलौ सर्वाः सर्वः सर्वस्य चाश्रमः

sarvam eva kalau śāstraṃ yasya yad vacanaṃ dvijāḥ devatāś ca kalau sarvāḥ sarvaḥ sarvasya cāśramaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Formerly, the saintly lord Agastya of the southern quarter was induced by Devas to make a request to Vindhya mountain.

श्लोक 15

उपवासस् तथायासो वित्तोत्सर्गस् तथा कलौ धर्मो यथाभिरुचितैर् अनुष्ठानैर् अनुष्ठितः

upavāsas tathāyāso vittotsargas tathā kalau dharmo yathābhirucitair anuṣṭhānair anuṣṭhitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

I am going on a pilgrimage, O excellent Mountain, along with these sages, the seers of truth. I am going in the southern direction.

श्लोक 16

वित्तेन भविता पुंसां स्वल्पेनैव मदः कलौ स्त्रीणां रूपमदश् चैव केशैर् एव भविष्यति

vittena bhavitā puṃsāṃ svalpenaiva madaḥ kalau strīṇāṃ rūpamadaś caiva keśair eva bhaviṣyati

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

O lord of mountains, give me the way, I beg of you. Accord me a hospitable welcome. Till I return you should stay thus.

श्लोक 17

सुवर्णमणिरत्नादौ वस्त्रे चोपक्षयं गते कलौ स्त्रियो भविष्यन्ति तदा केशैर् अलंकृताः

suvarṇamaṇiratnādau vastre copakṣayaṃ gate kalau striyo bhaviṣyanti tadā keśair alaṃkṛtāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

It should not be otherwise. "So be it", said the excel¬ lent mountain surrounded by sages. Sage Agastya went in the southern direction.

श्लोक 18

परित्यक्ष्यन्ति भर्तारं वित्तहीनं तथा स्त्रियः भर्ता भविष्यति कलौ वित्तवान् एव योषिताम्

parityakṣyanti bhartāraṃ vittahīnaṃ tathā striyaḥ bhartā bhaviṣyati kalau vittavān eva yoṣitām

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

The printed word Bhukti (enjoyment of pleasures) does not fit in the context. Bhakti ( devotiou) seems to be the right word. (Ed.)

यो यो ददाति बहुलं स स स्वामी तदा नृणाम् स्वामित्वहेतुसंबन्धो भविताभिजनस् तदा

yo yo dadāti bahulaṃ sa sa svāmī tadā nṛṇām svāmitvahetusaṃbandho bhavitābhijanas tadā

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Slowly and slowly he went to GautamI and got initiated for the sacrifice. Surrounded by sages he performed the sacri¬ fice for a year.

श्लोक 20

गृहान्ता द्रव्यसंघाता द्रव्यान्ता च तथा मतिः अर्थाश् चाथोपभोगान्ता भविष्यन्ति तदा कलौ

gṛhāntā dravyasaṃghātā dravyāntā ca tathā matiḥ arthāś cāthopabhogāntā bhaviṣyanti tadā kalau

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

There were two sinful sons of Kaitabha. They were Raksasas, the source of vexation to the virtuous. They were known in the abode of Devas as Asvattha and Pippala.

श्लोक 21

स्त्रियः कलौ भविष्यन्ति स्वैरिण्यो ललितस्पृहाः अन्यायावाप्तवित्तेषु पुरुषेषु स्पृहालवः

striyaḥ kalau bhaviṣyanti svairiṇyo lalitaspṛhāḥ anyāyāvāptavitteṣu puruṣeṣu spṛhālavaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Asvattha disguised himself as the holy fig tree and Pippala assumed the form of a brahmin. Both of them were anxious to destroy the sacrifice.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 22

अभ्यर्थितो ऽपि सुहृदा स्वार्थहानिं तु मानवः पणस्यार्धार्धमात्रे ऽपि करिष्यति तदा द्विजाः

abhyarthito 'pi suhṛdā svārthahāniṃ tu mānavaḥ paṇasyārdhārdhamātre 'pi kariṣyati tadā dvijāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

The evil-minded Danavas assumed the desired forms Asvattha the form of a tree and Pippala the form of a brahmin.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 23

सदा सपौरुषं चेतो भावि विप्र तदा कलौ क्षीरप्रदानसंबन्धि भाति गोषु च गौरवम्

sadā sapauruṣaṃ ceto bhāvi vipra tadā kalau kṣīrapradānasaṃbandhi bhāti goṣu ca gauravam

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Both of them harassed brahmins daily, O saint. Who¬ ever touched Aivattha was devoured by that tree.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 24

अनावृष्टिभयात् प्रायः प्रजाः क्षुद्भयकातराः भविष्यन्ति तदा सर्वा गगनासक्तदृष्टयः

anāvṛṣṭibhayāt prāyaḥ prajāḥ kṣudbhayakātarāḥ bhaviṣyanti tadā sarvā gaganāsaktadṛṣṭayaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Pippala, the younger Raksasa posed, as a chanter of Samans and devoured his disciples. That is why even today the chanters of Samans among the brahmins are devoid of com¬ passion.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 25

मूलपर्णफलाहारास् तापसा इव मानवाः आत्मानं घातयिष्यन्ति तदावृष्ट्याभिदुःखिताः

mūlaparṇaphalāhārās tāpasā iva mānavāḥ ātmānaṃ ghātayiṣyanti tadāvṛṣṭyābhiduḥkhitāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Living on roots, leaves and fruits like ascetics, men afflicted by drought will then kill themselves.

श्लोक 26

दुर्भिक्षम् एव सततं सदा क्लेशम् अनीश्वराः प्राप्स्यन्ति व्याहतसुखं प्रमादान् मानवाः कलौ

durbhikṣam eva satataṃ sadā kleśam anīśvarāḥ prāpsyanti vyāhatasukhaṃ pramādān mānavāḥ kalau

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

In the Kali age helpless men will constantly suffer famine and hardship, their happiness blocked through their own negligence.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 27

अस्नातभोजिनो नाग्निदेवतातिथिपूजनम् करिष्यन्ति कलौ प्राप्ते न च पिण्डोदकक्रियाम्

asnātabhojino nāgnidevatātithipūjanam kariṣyanti kalau prāpte na ca piṇḍodakakriyām

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

When Kali comes, they will eat without bathing, and will not worship the fire, the gods or guests, nor perform the offerings of rice-balls and water.

श्लोक 28

लोलुपा ह्रस्वदेहाश् च बह्वन्नादनतत्पराः बहुप्रजाल्पभाग्याश् च भविष्यन्ति कलौ स्त्रियः

lolupā hrasvadehāś ca bahvannādanatatparāḥ bahuprajālpabhāgyāś ca bhaviṣyanti kalau striyaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

In Kali women will be greedy, short in stature, given to eating much, with many children and little fortune.

उभाभ्याम् अथ पाणिभ्यां शिरःकण्डूयनं स्त्रियः कुर्वत्यो गुरुभर्तॄणाम् आज्ञां भेत्स्यन्त्य् अनावृताः

ubhābhyām atha pāṇibhyāṃ śiraḥkaṇḍūyanaṃ striyaḥ kurvatyo gurubhartṝṇām ājñāṃ bhetsyanty anāvṛtāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Scratching their heads with both hands, women will unveiled disobey the commands of elders and husbands.

श्लोक 30

स्वपोषणपराः क्रुद्धा देहसंस्कारवर्जिताः परुषानृतभाषिण्यो भविष्यन्ति कलौ स्त्रियः

svapoṣaṇaparāḥ kruddhā dehasaṃskāravarjitāḥ paruṣānṛtabhāṣiṇyo bhaviṣyanti kalau striyaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

In Kali women will care only for feeding themselves, be quick to anger, neglect the care of their bodies, and speak harsh and false words.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 31

दुःशीला दुष्टशीलेषु कुर्वत्यः सततं स्पृहाम् असद्वृत्ता भविष्यन्ति पुरुषेषु कुलाङ्गनाः

duḥśīlā duṣṭaśīleṣu kurvatyaḥ satataṃ spṛhām asadvṛttā bhaviṣyanti puruṣeṣu kulāṅganāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Women of good family will be ill-behaved, constantly longing for men of wicked character, and of bad conduct.

श्लोक 32

वेदादानं करिष्यन्ति वडवाश् च तथाव्रताः गृहस्थाश् च न होष्यन्ति न दास्यन्त्य् उचितान्य् अपि

vedādānaṃ kariṣyanti vaḍavāś ca tathāvratāḥ gṛhasthāś ca na hoṣyanti na dāsyanty ucitāny api

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Students will take up the Vedas without keeping vows; householders will not offer oblations nor give even what is proper.

अध्याय 230

श्लोक 33

भवेयुर् वनवासा वै ग्राम्याहारपरिग्रहाः भिक्षवश् चापि पुत्रा हि स्नेहसंबन्धयन्त्रकाः

bhaveyur vanavāsā vai grāmyāhāraparigrahāḥ bhikṣavaś cāpi putrā hi snehasaṃbandhayantrakāḥ

English

Forest-dwellers will take to village food and possessions, and mendicants will be bound by the machinery of affection for sons.

अरक्षितारो हर्तारः शुल्कव्याजेन पार्थिवाः हारिणो जनवित्तानां संप्राप्ते च कलौ युगे

arakṣitāro hartāraḥ śulkavyājena pārthivāḥ hāriṇo janavittānāṃ saṃprāpte ca kalau yuge

हिन्दी अर्थ

When the Kali age arrives, kings will not protect but plunder, seizing people's wealth under the pretext of taxes.

श्लोक 35

यो यो ऽश्वरथनागाढ्यः स स राजा भविष्यति यश् च यश् चाबलः सर्वः स स भृत्यः कलौ युगे

yo yo 'śvarathanāgāḍhyaḥ sa sa rājā bhaviṣyati yaś ca yaś cābalaḥ sarvaḥ sa sa bhṛtyaḥ kalau yuge

In the Kali age whoever is rich in horses, chariots and elephants will be king, and whoever is weak will be a servant.

श्लोक 36

वैश्याः कृषिवणिज्यादि संत्यज्य निजकर्म यत् शूद्रवृत्त्या भविष्यन्ति कारुकर्मोपजीविनः

vaiśyāḥ kṛṣivaṇijyādi saṃtyajya nijakarma yat śūdravṛttyā bhaviṣyanti kārukarmopajīvinaḥ

Vaishyas, giving up their own work of farming and trade, will live like Shudras, earning by crafts.

श्लोक 37

भैक्ष्यव्रतास् तथा शूद्राः प्रव्रज्यालिङ्गिनो ऽधमाः पाखण्डसंश्रयां वृत्तिम् आश्रयिष्यन्त्य् असंस्कृताः

bhaikṣyavratās tathā śūdrāḥ pravrajyāliṅgino 'dhamāḥ pākhaṇḍasaṃśrayāṃ vṛttim āśrayiṣyanty asaṃskṛtāḥ

English

Likewise low Shudras will take up the vow of begging and wear the marks of renunciants; uninitiated, they will adopt a livelihood based on heresy.

श्लोक 38

दुर्भिक्षकरपीडाभिर् अतीवोपद्रुता जनाः गोधूमान्नयवान्नाद्यान् देशान् यास्यन्ति दुःखिताः

durbhikṣakarapīḍābhir atīvopadrutā janāḥ godhūmānnayavānnādyān deśān yāsyanti duḥkhitāḥ

वेदमार्गे प्रलीने च पाखण्डाढ्ये ततो जने अधर्मवृद्ध्या लोकानाम् अल्पम् आयुर् भविष्यति

vedamārge pralīne ca pākhaṇḍāḍhye tato jane adharmavṛddhyā lokānām alpam āyur bhaviṣyati

When the Vedic path has vanished and people are full of heresy, the lifespan of the worlds will become short through the growth of unrighteousness.

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यमानेषु वै तपः नरेषु नृपदोषेण बालमृत्युर् भविष्यति

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyamāneṣu vai tapaḥ nareṣu nṛpadoṣeṇa bālamṛtyur bhaviṣyati

When men practise terrible austerities not sanctioned by scripture, children will die young because of the king's faults.

भवित्री योषितां सूतिः पञ्चषट्सप्तवार्षिकी नवाष्टदशवर्षाणां मनुष्याणां तथा कलौ

yadā yadā satāṃ hānir vedamārgānusāriṇām tadā tadā kaler vṛddhir anumeyā vicakṣaṇaiḥ

प्रारम्भाश् चावसीदन्ति यदा धर्मकृतां नृणाम् तदानुमेयं प्राधान्यं कलेर् विप्रा विचक्षणैः

prārambhāś cāvasīdanti yadā dharmakṛtāṃ nṛṇām tadānumeyaṃ prādhānyaṃ kaler viprā vicakṣaṇaiḥ

यदा यदा न यज्ञानाम् ईश्वरः पुरुषोत्तमः इज्यते पुरुषैर् यज्ञैस् तदा ज्ञेयं कलेर् बलम्

yadā yadā na yajñānām īśvaraḥ puruṣottamaḥ ijyate puruṣair yajñais tadā jñeyaṃ kaler balam

Whenever men do not worship with sacrifices the Supreme Person, Lord of sacrifices, then the strength of Kali should be recognized.

न प्रीतिर् वेदवादेषु पाखण्डेषु यदा रतिः कलेर् वृद्धिस् तदा प्राज्ञैर् अनुमेया द्विजोत्तमाः

na prītir vedavādeṣu pākhaṇḍeṣu yadā ratiḥ kaler vṛddhis tadā prājñair anumeyā dvijottamāḥ

When there is no love for the words of the Veda and delight in heresies, the wise should infer the growth of Kali, O best of brahmins.

कलौ जगत्पतिं विष्णुं सर्वस्रष्टारम् ईश्वरम् नार्चयिष्यन्ति भो विप्राः पाखण्डोपहता नराः

kalau jagatpatiṃ viṣṇuṃ sarvasraṣṭāram īśvaram nārcayiṣyanti bho viprāḥ pākhaṇḍopahatā narāḥ

In Kali, O brahmins, men struck down by heresy will not worship Vishnu, Lord of the world, the creator of all, the Supreme Lord.

किं देवैः किं द्विजैर् वेदैः किं शौचेनाम्बुजल्पना इत्य् एवं प्रलपिष्यन्ति पाखण्डोपहता नराः

kiṃ devaiḥ kiṃ dvijair vedaiḥ kiṃ śaucenāmbujalpanā ity evaṃ pralapiṣyanti pākhaṇḍopahatā narāḥ

"What are gods, brahmins and Vedas to us? What is purity with water?" — so will men struck down by heresy prattle.

अल्पवृष्टिश् च पर्जन्यः स्वल्पं सस्यफलं तथा फलं तथाल्पसारं च विप्राः प्राप्ते कलौ युगे

alpavṛṣṭiś ca parjanyaḥ svalpaṃ sasyaphalaṃ tathā phalaṃ tathālpasāraṃ ca viprāḥ prāpte kalau yuge

jānuprāyāṇi vastrāṇi śamīprāyā mahīruhāḥ śūdraprāyās tathā varṇā bhaviṣyanti kalau yuge

kasya mātā pitā kasya yadā karmātmakaḥ pumān iti codāhariṣyanti śvaśurānugatā narāḥ

वाङ्मनःकायजैर् दोषैर् अभिभूताः पुनः पुनः नराः पापान्य् अनुदिनं करिष्यन्त्य् अल्पमेधसः

vāṅmanaḥkāyajair doṣair abhibhūtāḥ punaḥ punaḥ narāḥ pāpāny anudinaṃ kariṣyanty alpamedhasaḥ

Overcome again and again by faults of speech, mind and body, men of little intelligence will commit sins day after day.

निःसत्यानाम् अशौचानां निर्ह्रीकाणां तथा द्विजाः यद् यद् दुःखाय तत् सर्वं कलिकाले भविष्यति

niḥsatyānām aśaucānāṃ nirhrīkāṇāṃ tathā dvijāḥ yad yad duḥkhāya tat sarvaṃ kalikāle bhaviṣyati

For those without truth, without purity and without shame, O brahmins, whatever brings sorrow will all come about in the Kali age.

निःस्वाध्यायवषट्कारे स्वधास्वाहाविवर्जिते तदा प्रविरलो विप्रः कश्चिल् लोके भविष्यति

niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāre svadhāsvāhāvivarjite tadā praviralo vipraḥ kaścil loke bhaviṣyati

When the world is without Vedic recitation and the cry of vashat, and devoid of svadha and svaha, a true brahmin will then be rare in the world.

श्लोक 59

तत्राल्पेनैव कालेन पुण्यस्कन्धम् अनुत्तमम् करोति यः कृतयुगे क्रियते तपसा हि यः

tatrālpenaiva kālena puṇyaskandham anuttamam karoti yaḥ kṛtayuge kriyate tapasā hi yaḥ

Yet in that age one gains in a short time the unsurpassed mass of merit that in the Krita age is gained through austerity."

कस्मिन् काले ऽल्पको धर्मो ददाति सुमहाफलम् वक्तुम् अर्हस्य् अशेषेण श्रोतुं वाञ्छा प्रवर्तते

kasmin kāle 'lpako dharmo dadāti sumahāphalam vaktum arhasy aśeṣeṇa śrotuṃ vāñchā pravartate

"In which age does a little dharma give very great fruit? Please tell us fully; we long to hear."

धन्ये कलौ भवेद् विप्रास् त्व् अल्पक्लेशैर् महत् फलम् तथा भवेतां स्त्रीशूद्रौ धन्यौ चान्यन् निबोधत

what is gained in Krita by ten years, in Treta by one year, and in Dvapara by a month, is gained in Kali by a day and a night.

तपसो ब्रह्मचर्यस्य जपादेश् च फलं द्विजाः प्राप्नोति पुरुषस् तेन कलौ साध्व् इति भाषितुम्

tapaso brahmacaryasya japādeś ca phalaṃ dvijāḥ prāpnoti puruṣas tena kalau sādhv iti bhāṣitum

The fruit of austerity, celibacy, japa and the like, O brahmins, a man attains quickly in Kali; that is why I said 'Well done' to it.

ध्यायन् कृते यजन् यज्ञैस् त्रेतायां द्वापरे ऽर्चयन् यद् आप्नोति तद् आप्नोति कलौ संकीर्त्य केशवम्

What one gains in Krita by meditation, in Treta by sacrifices and in Dvapara by worship, one gains in Kali by chanting the name of Keshava.

धर्मोत्कर्षम् अतीवात्र प्राप्नोति पुरुषः कलौ स्वल्पायासेन धर्मज्ञास् तेन तुष्टो ऽस्म्य् अहं कलौ

dharmotkarṣam atīvātra prāpnoti puruṣaḥ kalau svalpāyāsena dharmajñās tena tuṣṭo 'smy ahaṃ kalau

In Kali a man gains the highest excellence of dharma with very little effort, O knowers of dharma; that is why I am pleased with Kali.

व्रतचर्यापरैर् ग्राह्या वेदाः पूर्वं द्विजातिभिः ततस् तु धर्मसंप्राप्तैर् यष्टव्यं विधिवद् धनैः

vratacaryāparair grāhyā vedāḥ pūrvaṃ dvijātibhiḥ tatas tu dharmasaṃprāptair yaṣṭavyaṃ vidhivad dhanaiḥ

In earlier ages the twice-born had to receive the Vedas while devoted to strict vows, and then, having gained dharma, sacrifice duly with wealth.

वृथा कथा वृथा भोज्यं वृथा स्वं च द्विजन्मनाम् पतनाय तथा भाव्यं तैस् तु संयतिभिः सह

vṛthā kathā vṛthā bhojyaṃ vṛthā svaṃ ca dvijanmanām patanāya tathā bhāvyaṃ tais tu saṃyatibhiḥ saha

Idle talk, idle eating and idle wealth bring the twice-born to a fall, so they must live in constant restraint.

असम्यक्करणे दोषास् तेषां सर्वेषु वस्तुषु भोज्यपेयादिकं चैषां नेच्छाप्राप्तिकरं द्विजाः

asamyakkaraṇe doṣās teṣāṃ sarveṣu vastuṣu bhojyapeyādikaṃ caiṣāṃ necchāprāptikaraṃ dvijāḥ

In all things they incur faults by doing them improperly; even their food and drink do not come as they wish, O brahmins.

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Being dependent in all their duties, they win their worlds with great hardship and humility.

श्लोक 70

द्विजशुश्रूषणेनैव पाकयज्ञाधिकारवान् निजं जयति वै लोकं शूद्रो धन्यतरस् ततः

dvijaśuśrūṣaṇenaiva pākayajñādhikāravān nijaṃ jayati vai lokaṃ śūdro dhanyataras tataḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

The Shudra, entitled to the simple domestic sacrifices, wins his own world merely by serving the twice-born; so he is the more fortunate.

भक्ष्याभक्ष्येषु नाशास्ति येषां पापेषु वा यतः नियमो मुनिशार्दूलास् तेनासौ साध्व् इतीरितम्

bhakṣyābhakṣyeṣu nāśāsti yeṣāṃ pāpeṣu vā yataḥ niyamo muniśārdūlās tenāsau sādhv itīritam

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Since for him there are no strict rules about what may and may not be eaten, or about sins, O tigers among sages, he was called 'blessed.'

स्वधर्मस्याविरोधेन नरैर् लभ्यं धनं सदा प्रतिपादनीयं पात्रेषु यष्टव्यं च यथाविधि

svadharmasyāvirodhena narair labhyaṃ dhanaṃ sadā pratipādanīyaṃ pātreṣu yaṣṭavyaṃ ca yathāvidhi

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Men must always gain wealth without violating their own dharma, give it to worthy recipients, and sacrifice according to rule.

श्लोक 73

तस्यार्जने महान् क्लेशः पालनेन द्विजोत्तमाः तथा सद्विनियोगाय विज्ञेयं गहनं नृणाम्

tasyārjane mahān kleśaḥ pālanena dvijottamāḥ tathā sadviniyogāya vijñeyaṃ gahanaṃ nṛṇām

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

There is great hardship in earning it and in keeping it, O best of brahmins, and using it rightly is known to be difficult for men.

एभिर् अन्यैस् तथा क्लेशैः पुरुषा द्विजसत्तमाः निजाञ् जयन्ति वै लोकान् प्राजापत्यादिकान् क्रमात्

ebhir anyais tathā kleśaiḥ puruṣā dvijasattamāḥ nijāñ jayanti vai lokān prājāpatyādikān kramāt

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

Through these and other hardships, O best of brahmins, men win their own worlds, the world of Prajapati and the rest, in due order.

योषिच् छुश्रूषणाद् भर्तुः कर्मणा मनसा गिरा एतद् विषयम् आप्नोति तत्सालोक्यं यतो द्विजाः

yoṣic chuśrūṣaṇād bhartuḥ karmaṇā manasā girā etad viṣayam āpnoti tatsālokyaṃ yato dvijāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

A woman, by serving her husband in deed, mind and speech, attains the same goal, since she shares his world, O brahmins,

नातिक्लेशेन महता तान् एव पुरुषो यथा तृतीयं व्याहृतं तेन मया साध्व् इति योषितः

nātikleśena mahatā tān eva puruṣo yathā tṛtīyaṃ vyāhṛtaṃ tena mayā sādhv iti yoṣitaḥ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

without the great hardship that a man undergoes; that is why I said the third thing, 'Blessed are women.'

एतद् वः कथितं विप्रा यन्निमित्तम् इहागताः तत् पृच्छध्वं यथाकामम् अहं वक्ष्यामि वः स्फुटम्

by Shudras devoted to serving the twice-born, O best of sages, and by women effortlessly, simply through serving their husbands.

ततस् त्रितयम् अप्य् एतन् मम धन्यतमं मतम् धर्मसंराधने क्लेशो द्विजातीनां कृतादिषु

tatas tritayam apy etan mama dhanyatamaṃ matam dharmasaṃrādhane kleśo dvijātīnāṃ kṛtādiṣu

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

Therefore these three I consider most blessed. For the twice-born in Krita and the other ages the pursuit of dharma is hard,

तथा स्वल्पेन तपसा सिद्धिं यास्यन्ति मानवाः धन्या धर्मं चरिष्यन्ति युगान्ते मुनिसत्तमाः

tathā svalpena tapasā siddhiṃ yāsyanti mānavāḥ dhanyā dharmaṃ cariṣyanti yugānte munisattamāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

but in this age men will attain perfection with little austerity; the blessed will practise dharma at the end of the ages, O best of sages.

भवद्भिर् यद् अभिप्रेतं तद् एतत् कथितं मया अपृष्टेनापि धर्मज्ञाः किम् अन्यत् क्रियतां द्विजाः

bhavadbhir yad abhipretaṃ tad etat kathitaṃ mayā apṛṣṭenāpi dharmajñāḥ kim anyat kriyatāṃ dvijāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

English

What you had in mind I have told you even without being asked, O knowers of dharma; what else shall be done, brahmins?"
