na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṃ nemā vidyuto bhānti kuto'yamagniḥ | tameva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṃ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṃ vibhāti
The most cited verse of Mundaka. Sun, moon, stars, lightning, fire — all the natural light-sources — are not the source of light. Brahman is the light by which they shine. Awareness is the primary illumination; physical light is its shadow.
Meaning
There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars; nor these lightnings — much less this fire. He shining, all shine after him; by his light all this is illumined.
Direct literal rendering preserving Sanskrit philosophical terminology.
Vyakhya
Science & Modern Application
शोध संदर्भResearch context · not scriptureComparative Research Noteशोध टिप्पणी
Consciousness-first Philosophy:
A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
