dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyā samānaṃ vṛkṣaṃ pariṣasvajāte | tayoranyaḥ pippalāṃ svādvattyanaśnannannyo abhicākaśīti
One of the most profound images in world literature. The two birds on one tree are the individual self (jīva) and the universal Self (Ātman/Brahman). The first eats — engaged in experience, pleasure, pain. The second only watches — pure witness, untouched. Both share the same body; one is entangled, the other eternally free.
Meaning
Two birds — inseparable companions — cling to the same tree. One of them eats the sweet fruit; the other looks on without eating.
Direct literal rendering preserving Sanskrit philosophical terminology.
Vyakhya
Science & Modern Application
शोध संदर्भResearch context · not scriptureComparative Research Noteशोध टिप्पणी
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:
A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
