कामस्याप्तिं जगतः प्रतिष्ठां क्रतोरानन्त्यमभयस्य पारम् ।स्तोममहदुरुगायं प्रतिष्ठां दृष्ट्वा धृत्या धीरो नचिकेतोऽत्यस्राक्षीः
kāmasyāptiṃ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhāṃ kratorānantyamabhayasya pāram | stomamahadurugāyaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ dṛṣṭvā dhṛtyā dhīro naciketo'tyasrākṣīḥ
Yama enumerates everything the worldly heart could want, and marvels: you saw it and refused it. The praise is meant to make the boy fully aware of what he has chosen against.

कामना की पूर्ति, जगत् की प्रतिष्ठा, यज्ञ का अनन्त फल, अभय का पार, स्तुत-योग्य महान् उरुगाय प्रतिष्ठा — इन सबको देखकर भी, हे धीर नचिकेता! तूने धैर्य से अस्वीकार कर दिया।

The fulfillment of desire, the foundation of the world, the infinite fruit of sacrifice, the further shore of fearlessness, the greatly praised wide-going abode — seeing this, you, wise Naciketas, with steadiness, rejected it!
