Life constantly offers two paths: what feels good (preya) and what is genuinely good (śreya). Most unconsciously follow preya their whole lives. The wise learn to choose śreya consistently — even when difficult.
Meaning
The good is one thing; the pleasant is another. These two, with different aims, bind a person. Of these, well it goes for the one who takes up the good; he who chooses the pleasant falls short of the goal.
Direct literal rendering preserving Sanskrit philosophical terminology.
Vyakhya

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
