यस्मिन्निदं विचिकित्सन्ति मृत्यो यत् साम्पराये महति ब्रूहि नस्तत् ।योऽयं वरो गूढमनुप्रविष्टो नान्यं तस्मान्नचिकेता वृणीते
yasminnidaṃ vicikitsanti mṛtyo yat sāmparāye mahati brūhi nastat | yo'yaṃ varo gūḍhamanupraviṣṭo nānyaṃ tasmānnaciketā vṛṇīte
Closing of Vallī 1. The boy holds his ground. The boon must be the one that enters into the hidden — no other will satisfy. Yama must now teach.
अर्थMeaning
"हे मृत्यो! उस महान् साम्पराय (मृत्यु के बाद की स्थिति) के विषय में जिसमें लोगों को संशय है — हमें वही बता। यही वर है — जो छिपे हुए में प्रवेश करता है। नचिकेता दूसरा नहीं माँगता।"
अक्षरशः अनुवाद — मूल संस्कृत श्लोक के प्रत्येक पद का प्रत्यक्ष अर्थ।
'O Death, tell us about that great after-life concerning which men are in doubt. This is the boon — entering into the hidden. Naciketas chooses no other.'

पहले अध्याय का समापन। बालक अपनी भूमि पर अडिग खड़ा है। वरदान वही होगा जो इस रहस्यमयी और छिपे हुए सत्य में प्रवेश कराए — नचिकेता किसी अन्य विकल्प को स्वीकार नहीं करेगा। अब यमराज को उपदेश देना ही होगा।
