na jāyate mriyate vā vipaścinnāyaṃ kutaścinna babhūva kaścit | ajo nityaḥ śāśvato'yaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre
The decisive verse on the Self's deathlessness. The Self is not born — therefore cannot die. It does not come from elsewhere — therefore cannot return there. Body and Self are categorically different.
Meaning
The wise (Self) is not born and does not die. He has not come from anywhere; nothing has come from him. Unborn, eternal, everlasting, primordial — he is not killed when the body is killed.
Direct literal rendering preserving Sanskrit philosophical terminology.
Vyakhya

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
